Avon has gone by a lot of names. It started as Hampton in 1833, then became White Lick, then Smootsdell, then New Philadelphia, before finally settling on Avon once the railway depot went in. The town has a genuinely unusual claim to fame, too: local farmer Adrian A. Parsons began experimenting with soybeans here in the 1890s, importing seed from Japan in 1905, and by 1928 the American Soybean Association had recognized him as the first farmer of record to grow soybeans in Indiana. His farmstead is now on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the 1876 John W. McClain House.

Avon didn't incorporate as a town until 1995, and the growth since has been dramatic, from about 6,200 residents in 2000 to more than 20,000 by 2019, with the greater Avon area now closer to 55,000. That means a lot of the housing stock is genuinely new, built out along Washington Township, with families drawn by Avon Community Schools and a serious parks system: the 82.5-acre Avon Town Hall Park with its nine-acre lake, and the 120-acre Washington Township Park with splash pads and bike trails. Newer construction here often means newer appliances still under manufacturer warranty, but it also means more built-in fridges, tankless setups, and smart washer-dryer pairs that need a technician who actually knows what they're looking at.

Water in this part of Hendricks County comes through a mix of Citizens Energy Group and Aqua Indiana service, and like most of central Indiana it runs hard, which shows up as scale on dishwasher elements and extra wear on washer components over time. Avon sits about 20 minutes from our home base on the southwest side of Indianapolis, close enough that a same-day visit is realistic for most calls.
